Since I was in my early 20’s, I have been extremely conscious of eating clean (organic when I can) meals. I try to stay away from packaged foods that contain preservatives or other chemical ingredients. Naturally, it just made sense to me that consuming anything that has been altered from its original form was a danger to my body.
Recently within the past year or two, I have been focusing on using exclusively all natural skincare products. And here is the reason why: “The United States has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.”* On top of that, the “European Union has spent the past two decades banning or restricting more than 1,300 ingredients, while the US has only banned 11.”* To me, this is downright scary!!! Thousands of women are being diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and parabens are a known potential cause of cancer – yet walk into your local pharmacy, pick up any shampoo or lotion, and chances are you’ll see parabens listed as an ingredient. WHAT??!! Don’t we deserve better?
Wanting to stay away from dangerous chemicals in hygiene and beauty products, I have mostly turned to Whole Foods, Sephora and Kiehl’s. Finding products that actually smell good and work well has been trial and error for me. I can proudly say today that all of my haircare and my skincare is comprised of relatively safe ingredients (from what I know!) I am still working on makeup…maybe that will be a 2016 goal for me 🙂
Keep in mind that all natural beauty products are typically more expensive than the ones you can find at CVS. However, this is your body, health and life we are talking about – so to me, its worth spending a few extra dollars every month on a safe alternative.
Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser – I bought this for my sister one year as part of her Christmas present, and we both have been hooked ever since. Caudalie is a French eco-friendly natural skin care company. This cleanser is 99% all-natural and smells deliciously fresh (like green grapes!) I look forward to washing my face morning and evening with this product. Want to learn more about Caudalie’s beauty ethics? Click here.
ACURE Echinacea Stem Cell Body Lotion (can also find at any Whole Foods Market) – My cousin Jenn introduced me to this product (whether she knows it or not!) I was dog-sitting her boxer Bentley in the South End, and staying at her apartment for the weekend. This product was in her bathroom and I couldn’t help but try it (thank you Jenn!!!) The product contains Omega 3 fatty acids from organic pumpkin seed and argan oil. Personally, I like the lavender scent but I noticed that the citrus scent sells out the quickest at Whole Foods…so I am thinking that one must be the fan favorite. A quick warning: someone I am currently dating recently told me that the lavender smelled “a little like clay”. Do I care? Nope! I love this product.
Aubrey Organics Revitalizing Therapy Toner (can also find at Whole Foods) – This product is relatively new to me. I had run out of my favorite toner from Kiehls and was shopping at WF anyway, and decided to just pick up something then and there. I love the smell of this toner and enjoy spraying it on my face rather than using a cotton swab. Its slightly cheaper than the Kiehl’s toner, so I will see how my skin holds up come winter using this product.
Kiehl’s Facial Fuel UV Guard SPF 50+ – This is a men’s SPF lotion that I use each morning. Back in May I was looking for an oil-free SPF to apply under my makeup, since I often walk 40min to and from work. I am not sure why, but the women’s version of this product is not oil free. The Facial Fuel bottle is TEENSY and EXPENSIVE, however it lasted me the entire summer and I still have yet to finish the bottle (I swear I apply a generous amount everyday too!) I love how the sunscreen dries and it feels as though I am not wearing it at all. This product is wonderful, and hands down the best $38 I have spent on skincare all year.
Weleda Deodorant Spray (can also find at Whole Foods) – Switching from my clinical deodorant to an all-natural solution has been the most challenging product swap for me. I hate sweating… and more than that, I despise body odor and cannot tolerate it what-so-ever. It took me a long time, and many self conscious gym sessions, to find an organic product that worked well for me. WELEDEA IS THE REAL DEAL!! Keep in mind that this is a deodorant (not an antiperspirant – which contains dangerous chemicals)…therefore you will sweat. But fear not – you will not stink! In fact, you will smell amazing because the Wild Rose and Citris are delicious and leave you feeling ever-so-clean. I do not think I am the first to discover this secret because this product is often sold out 🙂
Stay tuned for another post on my all natural haircare regimen. In the meantime, does anyone have any all natural skincare products that they recommend? There are a lot of options of out there and I want to hear about them!
