One More Reason to Love Kale

Listen up kale-lovers, you now have one more reason to love this leafy-green super food. While browsing the floral section at Whole Foods I was surprised (and excited) to discover ornamental kale wedged between the tulips and viburnum flowers. Ornamental kale, also known as flowering kale, is a decorative cabbage plant that is grown and harvested most often during the fall and spring seasons and works perfectly when placed in a vase on its own or paired with a flower of your choice. Typically, when I think of fall flowers I think of chrysanthemums, so the idea of decorating with kale is new to me. While I love anything of the ‘mum variety, I welcome the signature purple and green colors of ornamental kale as an easy way to brighten up the cooler days ahead. Cheers to serving up kale in a vase!

Oh, and P.S. – ornamental kale is edible, however it has a bitter taste. I’d recommend using it as a garnish before you chop it up to put in your salad!

Turns out there are several kinds of kale. I did some rarceseh and found out ornamental cabbage is actually kale. I was surprised to learn that it’s edible too. The dark leafy kale is the kind we most commonly eat. It’s actually good roasted in the oven tastes like potato chips!
